Mudgee is a charming New South Wales country town, situated along the picturesque Cudgegong River. Named after the Wiradjuri word Moothi meaning "a nest in the hills," Mudgee offers the perfect blend of historic charm, natural beauty, and wine-filled adventures, making it a top destination for an idyllic escape.

Mudgee's fortunes took off in the 1850s during the gold rush, when hopeful prospectors swarmed the area. These days, the only gold you'll find in Mudgee is of the liquid variety, with more than 40 cellar doors popping up since the first grapes were planted back in 1858. And if we’re being honest, the siren song of the vines is what now lures most visitors to the region.

Best known for its robust award-winning reds, you’ll also uncork exceptional Chardonnay and an assortment of other crisp and lively whites during impromptu wine tastings, or over long, lazy lunches and elegant dinners.

Plan your trip around Mudgee Wine Month and the Flavours of Mudgee festival on 28 September, where over 60 local food and wine producers turn the town’s main streets into a foodie paradise. This free event promises a delicious journey through the region’s best offerings, complete with live entertainment and endless sipping opportunities.

Whether you’re the type who prefers a personality-packed shiraz, a cool Cab Sav, or a cheeky chardy, this guide to the ultimate wine escape in Mudgee will have your swirling and sipping your way through the best of the region.
